Digital Integration of Geological and Paleontological Heritage at the Geological Survey of Colombia (SGC)

The Geological Survey of Colombia managed geological and paleontological heritage procedures through manual, fragmented, and non-web-based systems. This resulted in limited access from rural and remote areas, low interoperability between platforms, and a lack of standardized processes, reducing efficiency and accessibility.

BENEFITS

  • 80% faster transaction processing.
  • 95% reduction in manual processes.
  • 150% more monthly requests processed.
  • 60% lower operational costs.
  • 100% system integration (SGC-wide).
  • 100% regulatory compliance (Decree 1353).

Root Causes

These challenges were caused by disconnected workflows and the absence of a unified online platform, isolated systems such as INGEP, geoportals, and mobile applications with no real-time data exchange, limited processing capacity and connectivity in fieldwork zones, and weak coordination with museums, universities, and local institutions.

Solution

A centralized electronic platform was implemented to manage permits, inventories, and heritage-related data, supported by the consolidation of information through the National Geological and Paleontological Inventory (INGEP). The solution enabled online transactions with automated workflows and offline support for remote field operations, and was built on a scalable architecture that ensured full interoperability across SGC platforms and external stakeholders.
